Hungary has changed its environmental rules. New fines can now reach five billion forints. This happened on Sunday, October 25, 2026.

The biggest change affects large companies. Businesses with over 100 million forints in yearly revenue now face much higher penalties. The maximum fine for operating without a permit jumped from two billion forints to five billion. The fine will never be more than five percent of a company’s annual income but it can still be enormous.

Repeat offenders will pay even more. If a company has been fined for pollution twice in the last five years, the next fine must be at least half a percent of its yearly revenue. That means a minimum of five million forints but often much more.

The old cap for waste management fines is gone. There is no upper limit for companies anymore. For individuals, the maximum fine stays at 50 million forints.

This new law targets specific industries. Battery factories, chemical plants, and energy companies should pay close attention. Large agricultural and food production facilities are also in focus.

The government says this is necessary. Some companies make large profits from activities that harm the environment. The people living nearby bear the cost of that pollution. The new fines aim to make it more expensive to break the rules than to follow them.

This law only punishes those who break existing environmental laws. Companies that follow the rules have nothing to fear. The government hopes this will level the playing field and protect Hungary’s land, air, and water.
