Direct train service from Belgrade to Budapest and Vienna starts on December 13th.
This marks the end of a seven year pause. The line has been under renovation, partly financed and built by Chinese companies. Now, travel between the Serbian and Hungarian capitals will be restored.
You can expect eight daily departures from Belgrade. Six trains will go directly to Budapest. Two will continue onward, passing through Budapest to reach Vienna. These Vienna bound trains will be operated with Hungarian railcars, so you will not need to change trains.
Ticket sales have not yet started. The final fares are still being negotiated between the Serbian, Hungarian and Austrian railway companies.
The journey from Belgrade to Budapest should take about three hours. The trip to Vienna will take roughly six hours. Border crossing checks will influence the total travel time.
On the Serbian section, trains can travel up to 200 kilometers per hour. In Hungary, the speed limit is 160 kilometers per hour. Necessary tests on the Hungarian side have been successfully completed.
The international service follows the planned launch of domestic passenger traffic in Serbia, which started in October. Serbian and Hungarian officials have confirmed all obligations for the project are met and final adjustments are being made.
