The family allowance in Hungary will double in 2027. This includes every type of support: for families with one child, with multiple children, for single parents, and for families raising a child with a serious long term illness or disability.

Prime Minister Péter Magyar gave the details in a video. The change will affect about 1.7 million children and one million families.

For a family with one child, the monthly support rises from 12,200 forints to 24,400 forints. That is an extra 146,400 forints per year. Over 363,000 families will get this.

For two children, the amount per child increases from 13,300 forints to 26,600 forints. This means a total of 53,200 forints each month, an extra 319,200 forints annually.

For families with three or more children, each child’s allowance goes from 16,000 forints to 32,000 forints. A family with three children gets 96,000 forints monthly, or an extra 576,000 forints per year.

Single parents will see a bigger increase. For one child, the amount rises from 13,700 forints to 27,400 forints monthly. For two children, it goes to 29,600 forints per child per month, meaning an annual increase of 355,200 forints.

A crucial part of the plan is the increased support for families caring for a child with a serious long term illness or disability. Currently, about 134,000 children receive this higher allowance. Their monthly support will jump from 23,300 forints to 46,600 forints. This gives families an extra 279,600 forints per year per child.

For a single parent in this situation, the amount rises from 25,900 forints to 51,800 forints monthly, an annual increase of 310,800 forints.

The change also helps adults with a serious disability who receive the allowance in their own right. For the 28,595 people in this group, the monthly amount increases from 20,300 forints to 40,600 forints, an extra 243,600 forints each year.

Children in foster care or homes will also benefit. Their general monthly support increases from 14,800 forints to 29,600 forints. If such a child has a serious illness or disability, they too will receive the higher amount of 46,600 forints per month.

The government has budgeted nearly 300 billion forints to pay for this increase starting in 2027. Prime Minister Magyar stated the goal is to restore the purchasing power the allowance has lost to inflation over nearly two decades. The new amounts are planned to take effect on January 1, 2027 pending final approval of the necessary laws.
