Polish authorities arrested a 55-year-old Russian man on suspicion of espionage. Police noticed him during a football match in the southern town of Świdnica. He was photographing passing trains and railway infrastructure near a railway crossing.

Investigators found he possessed thousands of photos. The images showed critical facilities and transport infrastructure and were not only taken in Poland. Polish police believe all evidence indicates the photos could have been used for activities threatening the country’s security.

The man has not been found guilty. A court ordered his detention for three months while the investigation continues. Poland has repeatedly accused Russia of conducting intelligence and influence operations on its soil sometimes involving foreign citizens. Moscow consistently denies these allegations.
