Drone Debris Near Romanian Port Raises Security Concerns
On Friday, another piece of drone debris was discovered in Romanian waters. According to the Romanian Ministry of Defence, the fragment of an uncrewed aerial vehicle was found adrift just 25 meters from the southern breakwater of the Midia Port maritime harbour.
This is not the first drone to wash ashore in Romania recently. In recent weeks, the water has carried drone wreckage to the shores of Romanian coastal resorts on several occasions. The latest find was inspected by the Romanian Navy’s explosive ordnance disposal dive team, who determined that the debris contained no explosives. The wreckage was subsequently recovered from the water and handed over to the coast guard for further investigation.
The incident adds to growing security concerns in the Black Sea region. Just a day earlier, on Thursday, a Romanian Air Force F-16 fighter jet destroyed a maritime drone equipped with explosives. This drone had approached within a few hundred meters of a platform belonging to the Neptun Deep gas field located in Romania’s exclusive economic zone.
Separately, on the same Thursday, the Romanian defence ministry reported that yet another drone had crashed in a remote, uninhabited area of Tulcea county close to the river border with Ukraine. These events unfold against a backdrop of attacks of unprecedented intensity in recent days along the Ukrainian front in areas bordering Romania.
The repeated discovery and interception of drones highlight heightened tensions and underscore the ongoing security challenges faced by Romania in its coastal and border regions during 2025.
