The latest numbers show the Hungarian economy nearly stalled in the summer.

Growth is slowing down. According to fresh data from the Central Statistical Office (KSH), the economy grew by only 0.1 percent in the third quarter compared to the previous three months. In the first two quarters of the year, growth was 0.6 percent each time. On an annual basis, growth was 1.5 percent for July to September.

This slowdown contradicts earlier promises of a quick economic revival.

Analyst Dániel Deák pointed out that the previous government’s last full quarter saw 0.6 percent growth. The first full quarter under the current government saw just 0.1 percent. He warns that political drama cannot solve economic problems. For someone struggling to find work or a business owner with fewer customers, another political spectacle offers no solution.

The data reveals specific weaknesses. The industrial sector contributed the most to growth. Services also supported expansion but agriculture held it back significantly due to severe drought. Within services, tourism took a hit with accommodations hosting 3.3 percent fewer guests in September than a year earlier.

  • Economic growth in Q3: 0.1 percent
  • Annual growth from July to September: 1.5 percent
  • Investment volume fell by 9.1 percent year-on-year
  • Unemployment rate rose slightly
  • Tourism saw a 3.3 percent decline in guests
  • State projects are restrained

Investment is another concern. The volume of investments fell by 9.1 percent year-on-year in the second quarter. The unemployment rate also rose slightly.

Bank analysts share this disappointment. The 1.5 percent annual growth fell short of their expectations which ranged from 1.7 to 1.8 percent. They note this is the second quarter in a row where performance has been below forecasts. They see no clear signs of a turnaround in investment yet. State projects are restrained and companies are waiting to see what happens.

What comes next? The current figures are preliminary. Detailed data for the third quarter will be published on December 1st. Analysts say improvement will depend on industrial momentum, a recovery in investment and later, the arrival of EU funds. Risks remain from energy prices and international uncertainty.

For now, the numbers tell a clear story. The promised economic acceleration has not yet begun.
