President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has made a clear statement about the path to ending the war. In an interview, he said Ukraine is ready for an immediate ceasefire and a freeze of the conflict along the current front line.

This means stopping the fighting now. But it does not mean accepting Russia’s claims over occupied land. Zelenskyy draws a firm line between these two ideas. A ceasefire is about pausing the violence. It is not a legal surrender of territory.

He addressed claims that Russia controls 25 percent of Ukraine. Zelenskyy stated the correct figure is 19.3 percent. The higher number would only be true if Ukraine willingly gave up the parts of Donbas it still holds. His government has no intention of doing that.

The offer is straightforward. Ukraine wants the guns to fall silent where they are today. This could save countless lives. Yet Ukraine will not recognize Russian rule over Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, or other occupied regions. The core principle remains that this land is Ukrainian.

This position creates a potential starting point for talks. It separates the urgent need for peace from the unresolved question of borders. For people living in the war zone, a ceasefire could mean safety. For the international community, it presents a practical, if temporary, solution.

Zelenskyy’s statement signals a focus on halting the daily tragedy of war while preserving Ukraine’s legal claims. The future of the occupied territories remains a matter for diplomacy, not military surrender.
