For the first time in its 44-year history, the Paks Nuclear Power Plant in Hungary may face a complete shutdown. The reason is the unusually low water level in the Danube River, which the plant relies on for cooling.
In a recent Facebook post, Hungarian politician Péter Magyar shared an update on the situation. He mentioned that, due to the low water levels, the plant is currently operating at only 960 megawatts instead of its full capacity of 2,000 megawatts. Despite this, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has assured the public that the country’s energy supply remains stable for now.
To help manage the situation, voluntary energy-saving measures are in place across Hungary. These efforts seem to be working, as the peak demand on the power grid recently stayed 151 megawatts below the planned level.
Prime Minister Orbán and István Kapitány, the Minister for Economic Development, are scheduled to visit the site. Their trip includes a stop at a refinery in Százhalombatta before heading to the Paks plant. They plan to provide an on-site briefing about the current conditions and the steps being taken.
