Cyclists and nature lovers, get ready for some exciting news! The Hungarian government has announced plans to create a continuous bicycle path network connecting Győr to Budapest. This initiative was shared by the Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Dávid Vitézy, on his social media page.

As part of this project, a new, direct bicycle route will be developed from Komárom through Esztergom all the way to the Danube Bend. This route will be a section of the international EuroVelo 6 network, a system of long-distance cycling routes that crisscross the entire European continent. While there are already some bicycle paths along the Slovak-Hungarian border, they don’t yet form a complete, modern network. The new plan aims to change that.

One key improvement will focus on a currently dangerous stretch of road between Esztergom and Tát. Using funding of 2.8 billion Hungarian forints, planners will design a new, safer path to replace it. The design work starts now, with construction expected to begin in 2028. The goal is to connect this bicycle path directly to the Mária Valéria Bridge in Esztergom.

These EuroVelo routes are designed to support high-quality cycling tourism, allowing people to explore the continent on two wheels. But they are not just for tourists. As Minister Vitézy noted, these paths also serve as important routes for local commuters—people cycling to work or school.

The minister emphasized that developing Hungary’s bicycle path network will be a priority in the coming years, making cycling a safer and more attractive option for everyone, from 8-year-olds to 70-year-olds and beyond. So, whether you’re dreaming of a long bike tour or just a safer ride to the next town, this new network is a step in the right direction.
