Lázár János Resigns: Fidesz’s Future
On August 20, former Construction and Investment Minister János Lázár officially resigned from his parliamentary mandate. In connection with his resignation, he highlighted three main reasons, which he explained in detail.
„I resign from my parliamentary mandate effective August 20, 2026,” wrote the former minister on his social media page. According to Lázár, his resignation has three reasons, including taking responsibility.
He said he had played a role in the parliamentary group’s work because he agreed with the party leadership’s argument that alongside the renewal of Fidesz, there was at least as great a need for political continuity. „Today, I see this differently. The short period since the elections has convinced me that at present, the renewal of the party is more important than representing continuity. With my decision, I wish to contribute to this,” Lázár emphasized.
The Fidesz politician also indicated that his resignation has three compelling reasons. One is the issue of personal responsibility. In this context, Lázár stressed that he also bears responsibility for the „institutional hubris” and „lack of adaptability” that played a role in the election defeat. „All of us who were shapers of this campaign bear responsibility for the defeat. Undoubtedly, I too had poor statements that harmed Fidesz and perhaps even more so me personally,” he noted.
The second compelling reason Lázár mentioned, however, is the arbitrariness that has emerged in Hungary under the so-called Tiszakormányzás (Governance of the Tisza). „Tisza-democracy means they decide who can and cannot run in the elections,” he emphasized, referring to the mandate restriction introduced by the amendment to the Fundamental Law. In this context, Lázár further highlighted that the government’s current goal is to destroy Fidesz, not to lift up the country. „Whoever is driven only by revenge will run the country aground and drown the entire society in chaos.”
As the third reason, Lázár named renewal. „I consider myself a constructive person who seeks cooperation. I have no place or future in this destruction, the parliamentary circus, the daily personal skirmishes. I do not shirk any political responsibility, but at the same time, I fully hand over the political opportunity to my successor to be selected by Fidesz. I consider this the only correct step to be of use, not a burden, to my political community even in this period of absolute theatricality,” he wrote.
According to the former minister, in the current situation, the party needs new leadership, a new direction, and a cultural change to be successful and he can contribute the most to this renewal with his resignation.
At the same time, Lázár indicated that he is ready to look for new challenges after closing his parliamentary career. „Therefore, I am now closing the 25-year chapter of my parliamentary career. I am 51 years old, full of energy, experience, and a desire to work. I have enough reserves to learn new things, to face new tasks and challenges. The often-mentioned renewal must be started not only in politics and the party but also within ourselves. I am doing this,” he concluded his post.
FIDESZ: JÁNOS LÁZÁR’S DEPARTURE WAS PLANNED
The party responded shortly after the former minister’s announcement. According to Fidesz’s statement, Lázár’s departure was in harmony with the party’s renewal and is not an unexpected event.
„János Lázár resigns from his parliamentary mandate as of today. His decision is part of the planned transformation of the Fidesz parliamentary group,” they wrote.
„We thank him for his work as a representative in the interest of Hungary and the Hungarian people. We will provide information about filling the vacant mandate and the further steps of the transformation at the appropriate time,” the party concluded its statement.
