András Rácz, a recognized expert on Russia and sharp critic of the Orbán government’s foreign policy, has been appointed as the Deputy Director-General for Research and Scientific Affairs at the Hungarian Institute of Foreign Affairs. He will work alongside Director-General Botond Feledy in the institute’s new leadership. This marks a significant personnel change following Gladden Pappin’s resignation, returning the institute to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ direct oversight.

Rácz, currently a senior researcher at the German Council on Foreign Relations and a former lecturer at Corvinus University, is known for his independent, often critical stance. The appointment, reported by Index and confirmed by the ministry’s announcement of Feledy’s leadership on August 3, places a prominent analyst with a strong academic background into a key institutional role. The institute, as Hungary’s leading foreign policy think tank, provides strategic analysis and background materials for diplomatic decision-making.

This move signifies a potential shift towards integrating more diverse, expertise-driven perspectives into the official foreign policy advisory framework. The professional consolidation of the institute’s leadership is now complete, tasked with supporting Hungary’s navigation of complex international political processes.

  • Former lecturer at Corvinus University
